Governor Greg Abbott spoke in Austin on Tuesday, keynoting the grand opening of the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s new office.

The Houston Chronicle reports,

Abbott told the crowd that the federal government under the Obama administration threatens their freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Specifically, he talked about the assault on freedom of speech in Houston, saying,

Pastors’ sermons in Houston, Texas were subpoenaed by their own mayor.”

At the luncheon on Tuesday, Governor Abbott praised Texas for being “what America is supposed to be.” The Governor pointed to bills currently going through the legislature.

He cited a measure to allow open carry of handguns that’s working toward legislative passage, border-security efforts and fiscal moves including broad legislative support for more than $4 billion in tax cuts.

Governor Abbott also reinforced the importance of Texas to the United States, saying,

We are at a time of crisis, and Texas must lead the way out of these times of crisis.”
