On the weekend of August 30th, the city of West, Texas celebrated its triumph over tragedy at the 38th annual Westfest.

A city that was ravaged by unimaginable destruction and loss after a tragic explosion proved that nothing could hinder its spirit and cherished tradition.

I’ve got to tell you, the state of Texas is so incredibly proud of what the people of West, Texas have done. Because in typical Texas fashion, the people of West got knocked down, but they got right back up.

Greg Abbott toured the devastation one day after the accident where he saw the look of concern on so many faces. That worry was ousted by determination, as the community began to rebuild and recover.

You responded to that challenge with grip, with determination, with grace and faith in God. And you responded in a way that makes Texas so incredibly proud, and today, having risen above that you’re on the pathway to a stronger and even better future.

Westfest 2013 was only the beginning of the promising road ahead for the West community, and something Greg Abbott was privileged to be a part of.
