FORT WORTH – Governor Greg Abbott today joined Texans at a Texas Taxpayer Empowerment Event to unveil the next phase of property tax reform and reaffirm his commitment to delivering lasting relief for families across the state. Emphasizing the need to put people before government, the Governor laid out a plan to secure a stronger, more affordable future for every Texan.
“We are putting the power back where it belongs – with the people – and driving a stake through the heart of runaway appraisals, unchecked spending, and unpredictable tax hikes,” said Governor Abbott. “With these reforms and a constitutional amendment to eliminate school district property taxes on every homestead, we will make it more affordable for Texans to stay in their homes and keep Texas the strongest economy in America.”
Governor Abbott delivered a clear and forceful call to overhaul Texas’ property tax system. He noted that soaring appraisals, unchecked local spending, and hidden tax hikes continue to drive up costs for families. The Governor also called for a constitutional amendment to eliminate the school district property tax for all homesteads, wiping out the largest share of most homeowners’ property tax bills and delivering meaningful relief.
Governor Abbott’s 5-Point Property Tax Relief Plan:
- Require Common Sense Local Spending Limits
- Require Two-Thirds Voter Approval for Tax Increases
- Empower Voters to Roll Back Taxes
- Create Appraisal Predictability and Cap Appraisal Growth
- Eliminate School Property Taxes for Homeowners
