89 Texas House Members and Nominees Back Taxpayer Empowerment Plan

CANTON – Governor Greg Abbott today built continued momentum by announcing that 89 Republican incumbents and nominees running for the Texas House have signed the Governor’s taxpayer empowerment pledge during a Taxpayer Empowerment event in East Texas.

“Texans shouldn’t be taxed out of their homes,” said Governor Abbott. “Working with Texas representatives and senators, we will overhaul the system to deliver lasting relief, creating a brighter, more prosperous future for all. It’s time for greater predictability and lower tax burdens. Next session, we will ensure that local governments cannot raise property taxes without the people’s vote.”

The Governor was joined by Senator Bob Hall, Representative Brent Money, Representative Keresa Richardson, and State Director of Americans for Prosperity (AFP) Genevieve Collins.

“Governor Abbott has made it clear that meaningful property tax relief is a top priority, and this plan proves it.” said the State Director of AFP Genevieve Collins. “He is not just listening; he’s going to do something about it. This plan creates permanent structural changes to ensure that the taxpayer is put first.”

Governor Abbott emphasized that while the State of Texas does not impose a property tax, homeowners continue to face rising tax bills because local governments keep increasing property taxes. The Governor highlighted that his new plan will overhaul the property tax system and provide real, meaningful relief—saving Texans thousands of dollars.

Governor Abbott’s Five-Point Property Tax Relief Plan:

  • Require Common Sense Local Spending Limits
  • Require Two-Thirds Voter Approval for Tax Increases
  • Empower Voters to Roll Back Taxes
  • Create Appraisal Predictability and Cap Appraisal Growth
  • Eliminate School Property Taxes for Homeowners
