THE WOODLANDS – Governor Greg Abbott today unveiled his new higher education initiative after a roundtable discussion with lawmakers, Sam Houston State University faculty, and students. This new statewide tuition savings program will lower the cost of summer courses that count towards an undergraduate degree and help students earn their college degree faster.
“Every Texas student should be empowered to pursue their academic goals,” said Governor Abbott. “We can accomplish that by making Texas higher education more affordable and accessible for students. Working with top-ranked universities, we will best position our students for future success.”
Governor Abbott’s plan will make it more affordable for Texas students to earn a college degree and begin their careers sooner by offering discounted summer courses. Partnering with esteemed Texas colleges and universities, students enrolled in one to five credit hours during the summer will now receive a $500 discount on their tuition. Students enrolled in six or more credit hours during a summer term will receive a $1,000 discount on their tuition.
Earlier this month, Governor Abbott announced new measures to strengthen K-12 education by protecting students from sexual predators, limiting classroom screen time, implementing strategies to help students excel in reading and math, banning foreign influence in public schools, and cutting administrative bloat.
