PALESTINE – Governor Greg Abbott today met with rural Texans at Old Magnolia Mercantile, a locally owned sandwich and coffee shop in downtown Palestine, to discuss his plans to keep Texas affordable. The Governor was joined by Senator Bryan Hughes and Representative Cody Harris.
“Rural Texas is the heartbeat of our great state,” said Governor Abbott. “Whether you’re a renter, small business owner, rancher, or someone in between – you deserve to live an affordable life in Texas. With my affordability agenda, we will ensure that our fellow Texans are going to be able to keep more money in their pockets.”
During the roundtable discussion, local farmers, ranchers, small business owners, and community leaders shared how rising property tax bills, insurance premiums, and workforce costs are squeezing rural Texas. Governor Abbott discussed how his affordability agenda directly addresses those concerns, including slashing property taxes by 50% for the average Texas homeowner, reining in skyrocketing appraisals, lowering home and auto insurance costs, and reducing electricity costs. The Governor also highlighted Texas’ investments in career and technical education to allow hardworking Texans earn a bigger paycheck and strengthen the pipeline of skilled workers that rural contractors and small businesses need. With these reforms, rural Texans will keep more of what they earn and make it more affordable to own a home, operate a business, and raise a family.
