HOUSTON – Governor Greg Abbott today met with local law enforcement at the Houston Police Officers Union (HPOU) to outline his four-point public safety agenda to keep dangerous criminals off Texas streets. The Governor was joined by HPOU Executive Director Ray Hunt and Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne.
“Last session, we passed the strongest bail reform laws in Texas history, targeted violent repeat offenders, and continued to help the Trump Administration secure the border,” said Governor Abbott. “But our work is not finished. Next session, I will put an end to the revolving door for violent repeat offenders, establish a statewide prosecutor, hold rogue district attorneys who refuse to enforce the law accountable, and give law enforcement the tools they need to keep Texas safe. Texas will remain a law and order state.”
“Saying Governor Abbott backs the blue is the understatement of the year,” said HPOU Executive Director Ray Hunt. “We are so pleased and grateful for everything you do and we hope to have you here for another four years.”
The Governor set a clear contrast between his record of public safety versus Democrat Gina Hinojosa’s votes that support defunding the police, allowing violent criminal illegal immigrants out on bail, and stripping law enforcement officers of protections from frivolous lawsuits.
“I candidly don’t know any lawmaker in Texas more hostile to our law enforcement officers,” said Governor Abbott. “Gina Hinojosa’s record on public safety is reckless and endangers the lives of our fellow Texans.”
