Greg Abbott has a plan to make Texas education first in the nation, starting with improving Texas students’ math skills to better prepare them for careers in science, technology and engineering.

The first phase of Greg Abbott’s Educating Texans plan will create Math Achievement Academies modeled on the Texas Reading Initiative’s Reading Academies that will train K-3 teachers in numeracy instruction and technology.

Math skills are a cornerstone to the future of Texas. To ensure we are educating our students for the more than one million new STEM-related jobs, we must advance their math skills.

Over the next ten years, employers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields will require one million more graduates with backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that US colleges and universities are on track to produce. Mathematics is the foundational skill for nearly all STEM pathways, and students’ future understanding of mathematics depends on an early foundation is based on a high quality, challenging, and accessible mathematics equation.
