SOCORRO – Governor Greg Abbott today announced additional housing proposals in his Keep Texas Affordable agenda. After meeting with El Paso and Socorro residents, the Governor highlighted two new affordability initiatives that expedite the permitting process and accelerate the construction of new homes across Texas.
“Speeding up permitting is another way to lower the cost of a home,” said Governor Abbott. “Permitting and inspection delays add thousands of dollars a year to the cost of a family home. My legislation allows builders to use third-party inspectors and requires local authorities to make an occupancy determination within 10 days. In addition, this legislation also allows home builders to build pre-approved home designs.”
The Governor’s latest affordability initiative will speed up the homebuilding process by allowing pre-approved housing designs to be built in other parts of the state and expand third-party review and inspection for permitting. These initiatives will shorten permitting timelines, reduce construction costs by thousands of dollars per home, and make homeownership more obtainable for Texans across the state.
Today’s announcement builds on Governor Abbott’s broader Keep Texas Affordable agenda, including his five-point property tax plan, a freeze on tuition and fees at Texas public colleges and universities, the Texas roof fortification program, a policy to reward safe drivers with lower premiums, a new Essential Benefits Health Insurance plan, capping the cost of life-saving medications, ending local building mandates to lower housing costs, and giving Texans a choice in their electricity provider.
