SAN ANTONIO – Governor Greg Abbott today announced the next initiative in his Keep Texas Affordable agenda that will lower electricity costs by expanding consumer choice and ending utility monopolies that drive up costs for Texas families and small businesses.
“We must address the cost of electricity that is putting a growing strain on Texas households,” said Governor Abbott. “That’s why I’m proposing legislation to end the monopoly control that cities like Austin and San Antonio have over electricity services and give Texans the freedom to choose the provider that works best for them. By expanding competition, residents in Austin and San Antonio could save more than 10% on their electricity bills, with small businesses seeing even greater savings.”
Speaking with San Antonio families and local business owners, Governor Abbott outlined how more than five million Texans served by municipally owned utilities can benefit from retail electric competition. In San Antonio alone, residents can save an estimated 10% on their monthly electricity bills while gaining the freedom to choose the energy provider that best meets their needs. The Governor’s proposal also ensures utility revenues are dedicated to providing reliable electric service rather than subsidizing unrelated local government spending.
Today’s announcement builds on Governor Abbott’s broader Keep Texas Affordable agenda, including his five point property tax plan, a freeze on tuition and fees at Texas public colleges and universities, the Texas roof fortification program, a policy to reward safe drivers with lower premiums, the new Essential Health Benefits insurance plan, capping the cost of life-saving medications, and lowering housing costs by cutting red tape and allowing for additional structures to be built on Texans’ property.
