Governor Greg Abbott today announced that his call to extend the Maternal Mortality Task Force is generating growing support across Texas. This legislation today passed the Senate on second reading, and will be up for a final vote tomorrow. Extending the Maternal Mortality Task Force is part of the Governor’s 20-item agenda for the ongoing special legislative session.

“Our pro-life advocacy extends to mothers as well as their children, which means the high rates of maternal deaths in Texas is a pressing concern. We believe continuing the work of the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Taskforce is vital to our ability to make sound policy decisions that result in the highest level of care for mothers and their infants. We commend Governor Abbott for including the extension of the work of this Task Force on the special session call.” – Kathryn Freeman, Director of Public Policy, Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission

“We commend Governor Abbott for calling on the legislature to address the shocking maternal outcomes in Texas. In a state as rich in healthcare resources as Texas, we owe mothers the highest level of care and concern for their health and safety. A pro-life state should do no less.” – Jennifer Allmon, Executive Director, Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops

“Texans for Life is very grateful Governor Abbott is committed to ensuring that the Maternal Mortality & Morbidity Task Force is able to continue its vital work to ensure that Texas is doing everything possible to protect our moms before, during and after birth.” – Kyleen Wright, President, Texans for Life

“The Catholic Health Association applauds the Governor’s goal of extending the state’s maternal mortality task force to study and review cases of pregnancy-related deaths and trends in severe maternal morbidity. Catholic hospitals across the state are deeply concerned with the high rate of pregnancy-related deaths in Texas and support efforts to achieve health equity by ensuring all individuals have access to quality preventative health care.” – Gabriela Saenz, Board member, Catholic Health Association of Texas
