Governor Greg Abbott today announced that his call for limiting the growth in government spending to no more than the growth of population and inflation is generating growing support across Texas. This issue is part of the Governor’s 20-item agenda for the ongoing special legislative session.
“NFIB/Texas fully supports legislation which will limit the growth of government and keep spending in check. In an NFIB/Texas survey, our members strongly favor legislation that would limit future annual increases in state spending to the increase in the rate of inflation plus state population growth.” – Will Newton, Executive Director, National Federation of Independent Business – Texas
“TPPF’s research finds that Texas’ state budget is up 11.8% above population growth plus inflation from 2004 to 2017, which amounts to an excessive burden of $1,600, on average, per family of four. With Texas on course to having a historic back-to-back Conservative Texas Budgets that increase by less than this metric while meeting the needs of Texans, strengthening the state’s spending limit to permanently restrain the growth of government should be a top priority so taxpayers have more opportunities to prosper.” – Vance Ginn, Economist, Texas Public Policy Foundation
“Spending limits are the foundation for fiscal responsibility and are designed to reduce the dependence on government. We applaud Governor Abbott for adding this item to the Special Session call and look forward to working alongside the Governor and all elected officials in this effort to limit the growth of government” – Jerome Greener, Texas State Director, Americans for Prosperity
