AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today encouraged all Texans to take full advantage of this weekend’s tax-free holiday for emergency preparation supplies. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items that can be purchased, and Texans do not need to issue an exemption certificate to claim the exemption. This year’s holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 30.

“Texas is no stranger to natural disasters, and in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, being prepared is now more important than ever,” said Governor Abbott. “Emergency supplies proved essential in helping Texas families respond and protect themselves when Harvey made landfall, and I want to ensure all Texans have what they need when the next disaster strikes.”

Following the 2016 legislative session, Governor Abbott signed SB 904 into law, allowing for sales tax exemptions on emergency supplies.

Items that qualify for the exemption include certain portable generators, hurricane shutters, ladders, portable self-powered light sources, fuel containers, radios, batteries, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and first aid kits.
