AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement following the passing of former Republican Party of Texas Chair Susan Weddington. Weddington served as RPT Chair from 1997-2003 and was the first female party chair elected by either major party in Texas. During her tenure, she helped elect more than 600 Republicans across the state and set the RPT record for fundraising in a single year at $16 million—a record that still stands today.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Susan Weddington,” said Governor Abbott. “Susan was a principled leader who made history as the first woman to serve as chair for either major party in the Lone Star State. She was a fierce advocate for conservative values and was pivotal in growing the Republican Party throughout the state. Susan was a proud Texan who committed so much of her life and career to building a better Texas, and she leaves behind a tremendous legacy for future generations. The First Lady and I send our prayers to Susan’s family and friends.”
