HOUSTON – Governor Greg Abbott today announced the next phase of his affordability proposals. Governor Abbott heard directly from Houston-area families about the financial strain caused by rising home and auto insurance premiums. The Governor discussed his plans to lower the cost of home insurance by establishing a Texas roof fortification program and to lower the cost of auto insurance by rewarding safe drivers with lower premiums.
“A more affordable Texas starts with cutting the cost of insurance,” said Governor Abbott. “Extreme weather events are a devastating reality in our great state. That’s why we will establish a Texas roof fortification program. We also want to make auto insurance cheaper in Texas. We will change state law so that safe drivers are rewarded with lower premiums.”
The Governor emphasized that while Texas has already frozen tuition at public colleges and universities, capped insulin costs, expanded telehealth, and cut red tape to lower housing costs, more must be done to reduce the everyday expenses Texans face. He pointed to his five-point property tax plan that will save the average homeowner $3,000, year after year, as one of many examples to keep Texas affordable.
The two new affordability initiatives will help hardworking Texas families keep more of what they earn.
