Linn: Achievement Districts For Schools Are Positive

The establishment of an achievement school district in Texas would allow a turnaround team to take over a failing public school after two years, and the idea deserves support.

Lisa Falkenberg’s recent column “Not sold on Abbott’s school takeover plan” (Page B1, April 24) recycles much misinformation that argues against achievement school districts with no specific, proven alternative for kids in our worst schools, leaving the unacceptable status quo that is failing the children who are most in need.

First, the data from the Recovery School District in New Orleans make it crystal clear that the Achievement School District model works. Since 2005, the number of students attending failing schools in New Orleans has dropped to fewer than 6 percent from an appalling 65 percent.
