AUSTIN – Just a few months after radical socialist Bernie Sanders delivered his keynote address at the Texas Democratic Convention in Corpus Christi, he returned to Texas to rally the vote for Gina Hinojosa. Sanders wants to make Texas a high-tax haven like California. He believes radical Texas Democrats Hinojosa and James Talarico are the perfect political pawns to do the job.
“Extreme socialist Bernie Sanders has a target on Texas and that should terrify Texas voters. High Tax Hinojosa’s agenda is a ‘Bernie Sanders’ agenda. Her radical policies will cost you more, make your family less safe, and threaten the way of life that has defined Texas for generations. Hinojosa supports the creation of a state income tax, voted to increase property taxes 40 times, and even voted to tax Texans after they die. Gina and her tax-happy comrade Bernie have no place in Texas.”
— Catherine Frazier, Texans for Greg Abbott Communications Director
- During a virtual grassroots volunteer rally on August 11, 2026, Bernie Sanders and Beto O’Rourke teamed up to urge Texans to “stand together” in support of Hinojosa and Talarico. As the Democrats continue to angle for a blue wave, Sanders said that he believes Texas is “at the heart of all that.” (Beto O’Rourke, Facebook Post, August 2026)
- During a CNN Town Hall in Des Moines, Iowa in January 2016, Sanders admitted his support of higher taxes for all, saying “We will raise taxes. Yes, we will.”
- If given the chance, Hinojosa will bring the same Bernie Sanders high-tax agenda to Texas:
o In an October 11, 2026 interview with MSNOW, Hinojosa defended her support of a state income tax with ignorance: “Silly me.” (Connect with Jacob Soboroff, 10/11/26)
o In an October 13, 2026 interview with CBS Texas, Hinojosa tried again disputing her vote against a constitutional ban on a state income tax. The anchor pointed out that “Hinojosa’s position [on a state income tax] isn’t quite consistent with legislative records.” (CBS Texas Interview, 10/13/26)
o In September 2016, during a Texas Tribune forum, Hinojosa offered her opposition to another tax cut at the state level. She said, “No, I don’t think we need to make more decisions at the state level to cut taxes.”(The Daily Texan, Sarah Philips, 9/16/16) (@texastribune, YouTube, 9/15/16)
o In a 2016 interview with KXAN, Gina Hinojosa said, “We don’t have … the third leg of that stool … income taxes.” (YouTube)
o In 2019, Hinojosa voted against banning a state income tax in the Texas Constitution. (HJR 38, 86R)
o Over her four years on the AISD School board, Hinojosa voted to increase AISD property taxes on the average Austin home by nearly $900 total. (FY 2018 Budget Table 20)
o Hinojosa voted 40 times to increase Texans’ property taxes. She was so desperate to hide her votes that Gina For Texas sent a cease-and-desist letter to multiple Texas TV stations. (LINK)
