Governor Greg Abbott has always ensured that Texas is a pro-life and pro-religious freedom state. Texas defends these rights unconditionally. Governor Abbott’s commitment to life and freedom of religion is exemplified by his actions throughout his time in office.
Religious freedom came under siege during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Democrat states, churches were shut down while bars and strip clubs remained open. Governor Abbott took immediate action to ensure that Texans of faith would always be able to attend their place of worship, banning government officials from ever issuing an order to shut them down. In addition, in 2015 and 2017, Governor Abbott signed into law two bills that protect pastors from being forced to marry same-sex couples and from being coerced to testify about their religious sermons.
Most recently, Governor Abbott signed SB 10, mandating public schools in Texas to display the Ten Commandments. In addition, he signed SB 11 into law, which allows public and charter school students to pray and read the Bible during the school day.
Governor Abbott also promotes a culture of life in Texas. In 2002, prior to the full overturning of Roe v. Wade, Abbott banned abortions after six weeks and penalized doctors who fail to treat an infant born alive after an attempted abortion. This law was a decisive victory and required the tireless, decades-long collaboration between anti-abortion advocates and pro-life politicians like Governor Abbott to make it a reality.
But Governor Abbott did not stop there; he targeted loopholes that pro-abortion advocates attempted to use to kill more unborn children. In June 2015, he signed legislation to improve the protection of a minor seeking an abortion. In 2017, he banned partial-birth abortions, required fetal remains to be cremated or buried, and prohibited the sale of fetal tissue. Finally, he limited insurance coverage for abortion procedures, so Texans are not forced to pay for them.
The biggest loophole that the Governor closed is the sale of mail-order abortion pills in the state. In September 2021, Governor Abbott signed into law a ban on prescribing, manufacturing, and distributing abortion-inducing drugs in Texas. And in 2025, the Governor barred Texas government entities from financially or logistically supporting abortion.
Governor Abbott also cares for children and their mothers who are facing difficult personal circumstances. In 2023, Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill into law that allows Texans to place infants they cannot care for in “newborn safety devices” (also known as “baby boxes”) free from any penalty. In 2025, he signed into law the Life of the Mother Act, which protects pregnant women by ensuring doctors provide treatment to a woman who has a life-threatening medical emergency. The law keeps mothers and their children safe by clarifying Texas’ exceptions to the abortion ban.
Lastly, the Governor started the Thriving Texas Families program, providing a record $180 million to support mothers, fathers, and their children with services like counseling, material assistance, adoption support, and more.
In Texas, we will defend our culture and safeguard Texas values from the radicals who want to take away our precious freedoms, including the most fundamental of those freedoms: the right to life.
