SAN ANTONIO – Governor Greg Abbott today held a press conference with the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County to highlight how the San Antonio District Attorney’s Office has failed to prosecute violent criminals, allowing them to go back onto the streets — putting Bexar County communities and law enforcement officers lives at risk. This marks the Governor’s second stop as he travels across the state to meet with law enforcement, local officials, and Texas voters to promote four new public safety initiatives that will protect communities and prosecute criminals.

“Too many Texans have died at the hands of repeat offenders. With these four new public safety initiatives, we will achieve our goal to make sure, as a state, we are protecting every Texas community and prosecuting criminals,” said Governor Abbott. “Texans deserve law and order, and this session we will further crack down on bad actors to keep our streets safe.”

Governor Abbott highlighted cases where violent criminals were released from custody by rogue district attorneys, putting innocent Texans and law enforcement officers’ lives in danger. Murder suspect Isaac Gonzalez was released on a personal recognizance bond after the Bexar County DA’s Office failed to indict him within the required 90-day time period. A new Texas Statewide Prosecutor will hold district attorneys accountable — and ensure that dangerous criminals are not let back onto the streets while awaiting trial.

Governor Abbott will fight for new public safety laws next legislative session that will:

  • Automatically deny bail for illegal immigrants charged with felony crimes.
  • Establish a Texas Statewide Prosecutor to ensure district attorneys prosecute violent crime and assist district attorney’s offices when needed.
  • Impeach rogue district attorneys who fail to enforce the law and deliver timely justice.
  • Expand the Department of Public Safety Repeat Offender Taskforce from Houston to Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin metropolitan areas.
