Parental engagement is an essential ingredient to a successful education system. Greg Abbott’s Educating Texans plan empowers Texas families to make decisions at the community level to improve their local schools.

Knowledge is power, and transparency is key. Parents should have access to essential academic, financial and capacity data about their local schools in order to make informed decisions about their children’s education. Phase two of Greg Abbott’s plan would give parents more tools to evaluate education options, including:

  • Extending the new A-F school district ranking system to individual campuses.
  • Making the percentage of 3rd and 5th grade students performing at or above grade level in reading and math public for every school.
  • Improving parents’ access to key financial performance data for their schools so they can compare academic progress with spending.
  • Allowing parents to express their top three campus preferences directly to their school districts, and publishing the percentage of parents who selected each campus as their number one choice.
  • Creating a user-friendly digital dashboard prominently displayed on every public school’s homepage including the campus-level ratings mentioned above in a format easily accessible to families.

No child should be stuck in a failing school. Empowering parents with crucial information about their school options puts them in the driver’s seat and allows them to improve their children’s education.
