HOUSTON — Governor Greg Abbott today outlined his Five-Point Property Tax relief plan to a packed room of Texas voters at a Taxpayer Empowerment Event in Houston. The Governor was joined by Representative Mano DeAyala, Representative Charles Cunningham, Representative Lacey Hull, Representative Mike Schofield, Representative Valoree Swanson, Representative Terri Leo Wilson, Commissioner Tom Ramsey, and Americans for Prosperity State Director Genevieve Collins.

“We know the burden Texans are facing because of skyrocketing local property taxes and rising costs,” said Governor Abbott. “We are here to cut taxes for families and small businesses and ensure they can keep more of their hard earned money. That is why we passed a $125,000 property tax exemption so small businesses can keep more of their money, hire more employees, expand their operations, and get relief from skyrocketing local property taxes.”

“When it comes to leadership, what you need in government is someone to put the marker out and say this is a priority and this is important to our state. If he makes it a priority, we will get to work because we know there is a path to make it happen,” said Representative Mano DeAyala. “His service to this state at the district court level, as Attorney General, on the Supreme Court, and as Governor since 2015 is that kind of leadership that helps the rest of us get our work done in the Legislature.”

“Property taxes do not care about your ideology, and they only go one way, and that is up. It is time to make sure relief is not temporary, but that reform becomes permanent,” said Americans for Prosperity State Director Genevieve Collins. “Taxpayers deserve transparency and permanent protections that rein in out of control spending and put Texas families first.”

As the 8th largest economy in the world, Texas remains one of the most affordable states in the nation, with no income tax, no death tax, no capital gains tax, and no state property tax. Governor Abbott remains committed to driving down local property taxes, expanding homestead protections, and advancing conservative fiscal policies that keep Texas the best place in America to live, work, and raise a family.

Governor Abbott’s 5-Point Property Tax Relief Plan calls for:

  • Common Sense Local Spending Limits
  • Two-Thirds Voter Approval for Tax Increases
  • Empowering Voters to Roll Back Taxes
  • Appraisal Predictability and Cap Appraisal Growth
  • Elimination of School Property Taxes for Homeowners
