HOUSTON – Governor Greg Abbott today received the endorsement of the Houston Police Officers’ Union (HPOU), which represents more than 5,000 Houston Police Department officers.
“I am forever thankful for the continued support of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, which represents thousands of men and women who protect one of America’s largest cities,” said Governor Abbott. “Texas will forever be a law-and-order state. As Governor, I signed bail reform to keep violent criminals behind bars, increased penalties for those who assault police officers, and delivered critical resources that our officers need to do their jobs safely and effectively. I will always stand with our heroic law enforcement officers as they keep Texas safe and secure today and for years to come.”
On Thursday, HPOU will host Governor Abbott and additional law enforcement groups in Houston for a campaign event underscoring the widespread support of law enforcement officers across Texas for Governor Abbott’s leadership and re-election.
“I’ve seen firsthand which leaders truly stand with law enforcement when it matters most,” said HPOU President Doug Griffith. “Governor Greg Abbott has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the men and women who serve on the front lines of public safety every single day. His leadership has provided the resources, support, and backing that officers across Texas need to effectively protect our communities. Governor Abbott understands the challenges we face and has never wavered in his support for those of us who wear the badge. That’s why our Executive Director, Ray Hunt, our PAC, and I fully support Governor Abbott.”
Governor Abbott has consistently backed Texas law enforcement. He has signed critical laws that increase penalties for criminals who assault police officers, protected qualified immunity so law enforcement officers can do their jobs without fear of political persecution, and surged resources to support border security operations. Under the Governor’s leadership, Texas has also worked to combat human trafficking, drug smuggling, and organized crime across the state.
