HOUSTON – Governor Greg Abbott today highlighted four new public safety initiatives during a press conference at the Houston Police Officers’ Union Headquarters.

“We have some judges who think criminals shouldn’t be held behind bars,” said Governor Abbott. “But the only way to ensure we’re making all our communities across the state as safe as possible is by getting dangerous criminals off the streets. This is a deadly situation, and the criminal justice system must be changed to ensure justice is being done.”

During his remarks, Governor Abbott highlighted the murders of Jocelyn Nungaray and Laken Riley, both committed by violent illegal immigrants, and emphasized Texas’ responsibility to protect communities and support victims of violent crime.

Last session, Governor Abbott signed the largest bail reform package in state history. Next session, he will fight for new public safety laws to protect communities, not criminals. This proposal includes:

  • Automatically deny bail for illegal immigrants charged with felonies
  • Establish a Texas Statewide Prosecutor to ensure rogue district attorneys now prosecute violent crimes
  • Impeach woke district attorneys who fail to deliver justice to victims and their families.
  • Expand the Department of Public Safety Repeat Offender Taskforce from Houston to Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin areas.
