Governor Greg Abbott’s School Safety Plan

Governor Greg Abbott unveiled his policy proposals to help curb violence in our schools and communities earlier this summer. Since then, Governor Abbott has taken numerous actions to enhance the safety of our students and teachers as they return to school.

In addition to announcing strategies that can help keep students safe, Governor Abbott identified nearly $110 million in funding to begin this important work. Approximately $70 million of this funding is already available, and Governor Abbott will work with the Legislature next session to secure an additional $30 million.

After the tragedy in Santa Fe, Governor Abbott worked with the U.S. Department of Education to immediately deliver $1 million to Santa Fe ISD through the School Emergency Response to Violence (SERV) program. These grants seek to restore the learning environment by funding important services, including mental health programs and security staff. The Governor’s Criminal Justice Division is also coordinating long-term mental health efforts for the Santa Fe community.

Under the direction of Governor Abbott’s office, the Texas Department of Public Safety launched the iWatchTexas mobile application in June. This app allows the public to report suspicious behavior, criminal activity, or threats to school safety. This tool will give Texans the ability to easily communicate with law enforcement and help prevent future tragedies in our schools and communities.

To reduce the threat of violence in the upcoming school year, Governor Abbott has instructed the Criminal Justice Division of his office to cover the costs of training for participants in the school marshal program. The safety of Texans is Governor Abbott’s top priority, and he is committed to enacting measures that will protect students and teachers in our schools.
