On September 25th, A panel of judges delivered a major victory for the Rule of Law by unanimously ruling that key components of our sanctuary cities ban are able to be enforced while the case is tied up in court. The judges from the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that sheriffs and law enforcement agencies must comply with federal detainer requests from immigration officials. Lawless sheriffs can no longer refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and put our communities at risk by releasing criminals charged with heinous crimes.

When Governor Abbott signed the sanctuary cities ban earlier this summer, opponents of the Rule of Law wasted no time challenging the ban in court. Before the bill could go into effect on September 1st, a judge halted enforcement of some parts of the bill, including the provision that sheriffs must honor detainers from federal immigration agents. Fortunately, this recent ruling will help restore law and order to our state by requiring cooperation between law enforcement officers. Even the Travis County Sheriff, a vocal adversary of the sanctuary cities ban, issued a statement that her office will honor all federal immigration detainer requests.

This decision will help keep our communities safe by removing dangerous criminals from our streets. Governor Abbott is confident that moving forward, this law will continue to be upheld as constitutional. We must remain vigilant in light of this recent ruling, however, as opponents of law and order will continue to relentlessly fight against our ban.
