The first U.S. oil refinery in almost 50 years is opening in Brownsville, Texas, proving that Texas will continue to power the world. Thanks to the new plant, $125 billion of U.S. light shale oil will be purchased and processed, $175 billion worth of oil will be refined, and the U.S. trade imbalance will improve by $300 billion.
This historic investment will further expand Texas’ affordable and reliable energy sources, all while bringing thousands of permanent, high-paying jobs to Texans. Importantly, the refinery will process light shale oil that is made right here in the U.S.A. This oil is cleaner, more efficient, and less expensive to refine than crude oil imported from our adversaries.
As America continues to expand its efficient energy infrastructure and reduce reliance on foreign oil, it is clear that Texas is the hot spot for innovation and production. In fact, AFR’s new facility is one of the only facilities in the country that does not require imported crude oil to function. This enhances American national security and positions the U.S. as a top supplier to our allies. It also saves you money – importing oil cost Americans more than $1.8 trillion from 2014 to 2024.
Governor Abbott is determined to keep gas and power affordable. Last year, he did just that by signing legislation to promote growth in the petroleum industry. To protect Texas’ black gold, the Governor created the petroleum product theft task force and gave the Texas Department of Public Safety additional tools to combat theft. By preventing oil theft, Texas can grow its economy and keep gas cheap.
Texas has always been at the top in the energy sector. In 2024, Texas was the 4th largest producer of oil in the world. But Governor Abbott wants to raise our state’s standing. That’s why, in collaboration with the Trump administration, he has championed workforce and economic development initiatives that will keep Texas running. By attracting companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil through Texas’ business-friendly policies, Governor Abbott has shown his commitment to fueling the nation.
