Greg Abbott Signs Law Banning Sharia Law

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is making his mission clear that Sharia law has no place in Texas — and he has taken decisive action to turn that mission into reality.

In March 2025, Governor Abbott announced on X that numerous state agencies were investigating potential illegal activities conducted by the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) and its affiliated entities. Those investigations produced results — fast: The following month, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality sent a letter to those same groups and notified them that construction of their large-scale, standalone “city” was in direct violation of state law and forced them to agree to halt any construction.

In a major win for Texans — and for the Western values we so proudly uphold — Governor Abbott also went on to sign into law Texas House Bill (HB) 4211, legislation banning residential property developments, like EPIC City, from creating Sharia compounds and defrauding and discriminating against Texans.

Religious freedom is a central pillar of the Texas Constitution. That is why this vital law, enacted in June 2025, takes a targeted approach: preserving freedom of religion while also protecting against efforts to forcibly impose Sharia law — something that presents an existential threat to Texans and to the American way of life. The Governor has been clear: Muslim-only “no-go zones” are not welcome in this state.

Governor Abbott took further action to prevent the erosion of Western values by Sharia law extremists when he declared on November 18, 2025, that the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) are foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal organizations. The move by Governor Abbott prohibits both entities from purchasing or acquiring any real property in Texas and authorizes enhanced civil penalties for criminal actors.

He also called for further investigations into Sharia courts in a letter to North Texas District Attorneys and Sheriffs, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and the Texas Department of Public Safety, saying that certain entities in Texas may be “masquerading as legal ‘courts’ staffed with ‘judges’ issuing orders that purportedly carry the authority to bind individuals to Islamic codes.’”

When Texas acts, so does the nation. On November 24, 2025, President Trump followed suit — designating three Muslim Brotherhood chapters as global terrorist organizations. Then, on December 8, 2025, Florida designated CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terror groups.

Governor Abbott joined the Glenn Beck Program on January 14, 2026 to further discuss Texas’ work to combat Sharia law. Here is what Governor Abbott said about the complaint CAIR filed in federal court challenging the Governor’s November 18 proclamation, and, notably, the subsequent “corrections” CAIR was forced to make in its amended pleading which reveal the group’s true colors:

Governor Abbott continued his conversation with Glenn Beck by underscoring what he will do next to prevent Sharia law in Texas — including a proposition slated to appear on the March 2026 Republican primary ballot that would advocate for a complete ban of Sharia law in the State of Texas:
